The Burundi flag was adopted in 1957. It consists of a white St. Andrew's Cross dividing the banner into four triangles: red triangles at the top and bottom, and green triangles on the left and the right. In the center of the cross is a white circle containing three red six-point stars, each of which is bordered in green. These three stars refer to the words in the national motto: "Unité, Travail, Progrès" (French for "Unity, Work, Progress").
